Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an
Italian composer, violinist, priest, and music instructor of the
Baroque era. Vivaldi composed over 800 pieces of music, including
several hundred concertos. Many of of his compositions were written
for the all-girl musicians of an orphanage in Venice where he taught
music. He also composed many operas and works of chamber music.
Vivaldi is best known for his set of four concertos for violin and
orchestra, The Four Seasons, but composed many other great
works. I have selected some of the best of Vivaldi that I recommend
for you.
The Four Seasons (Le quattro
stagioni) – A set of four concertos for violin and orchestra,
each concerto musically depicting a different season - spring,
summer, autumn, and winter.
L'estro Armonico – A set of 12
concertos for violin or violins, and orchestra.
La stravaganza – A set of 12
violin concertos.
Trio Sonata in D-minor, RV63 “La
Follia”
